An MBA human resource management degree provides a basis for a leading role in the business world, and in government and non-government organizations. This page tells you more about these programs, where you can find them, and what jobs are open to you after graduation.
The MBA program offers a broad-based education, with a choice of concentrations. One very popular and extremely important one is human resource management. Businesses have realised that their most valuable asset is not plant or equipment, but is their staff. Hence, the human resource department is now recognized for it's importance to the future of a business. This is sometimes acknowledged by referring to the activities of the HR department as "Strategic Human Resource Management".
An MBA human resource management degree prepares you for the many tasks involving human resource planning, development and interactions in the workplace, but also your managerial skills, income potential, and marketability. It offers the opportunity to obtain executive human resources jobs in the corporate world.

As a human resources manager you need the knowledge and skills required to become part of the new business environment requiring careful human resource planning, development and care. So one day may find you in a senior strategic planning meeting, another day you may be in a staff training session, and the rest of the week spent on dealing with staffing issues, for example recruiting new personnel, ensuring equal opportunities regulations are followed, mediating in harassment cases, and maintaining employee records. As a strategic leader, you need to understand the interrelationships between leadership, human resources, and the strategic goals of the business organization. As a human resource manager you need to understand the detailed legislation pertaining to staffing issues, and how to utilise your knowledge of psychology to bring about resolution to potentially damaging issues.
To achieve all this, an MBA human resource management program will probably include: communication skills, industrial psychology, organizational structure, information management, quantitative analysis, planning and development, compensation rights, global management, health and safety rules, labor law, hiring protocols, disciplinary action, dispute resolution, benefits administration, employee training and development, and employee relations.
There are many jobs available to graduates of an MBA in human resources management. Some graduates may be able to take up a position as an HR director, overseeing an HR department. Other positions that human resource MBA graduates might apply for include HR information systems specialist, training coordinator, and HR generalist. An HR information systems specialist would develop computer applications and information systems to help manage employee and potential recruits information. A training coordinator would organise training sessions for employees. An HR generalist's job would include responsibility for the programs and polices that govern HR matters.
Over the next 10 years in the US, a steady increase in the number of human resource vacancies is expected (US Bureau of Labor Statistics). In 2010, entry level human resources salary was about $53k per annum. But with a human resources MBA and appropriate experience, an HR manager can earn around $83k in the US. Similar demand and salaries can be expected in Canada.
