The GI Education Bill helps many service personnel to achieve educational goals. It assists them to study on campus or online, flexible, and convenient options to advance their education while serving, or after having served, in the Army, Air Force, Navy, Marine Corps, Coast Guard, or National Guard.
Most Americans will agree that having a college education is one of the basic goals that we hope to be able to accomplish in our lives. For many of us, we want to participate in a program that will positively enhance our personal and our professional progress. For those who currently serve in, or who have previously served in the United States Armed Forces, the Education Bill can offer that opportunity.
It is obvious to anyone seeking a college degree or specialized training that the cost of higher education is continuously going up. Many people have found that the scholarships, loans and available grants will help, but can leave significant gaps in the overall expenses. In order to aid servicemen and veterans who want to pursue their further educational goals, the government developed programs dating from 1944 that are collectively known as the GI Bill. Check with the US Department of Veterans Affairs Comparison Chart before applying for financial assistance so as to ensure that you get the best entitlement.
Before applying for a program, you should consider the advantages and disadvantages of taking college online vs education at a campus. And also, of course, check the university entrance requirements for the universities and programs you are interested in.
The GI Education Bill benefits
Among the numerous benefits these programs offer those who have served their country, one of the most important is the education assistance that gives compensation to those who want to invest in their future. The GI Bill is a common source of monetary funds that can be used for college, job placement and a wide variety of vocational training programs
The amount that an individual will receive can vary depending on a number of factors. The amount of active duty time served and the historical time period of service are some of the primary elements that will determine eligibility. The rates are based on attendance on a full-time basis. Naturally, compensations are less for those who may only attend part-time. Likewise, the funding will be at a reduced rate for participants with less than two years of service.
GI bill veteran benefits
For most veterans, these awards must be utilized between ten and fourteen years after separation from military service. These benefits will be lost if not used within the designated time frame that applies to the individual. Once again, situations can vary greatly, depending upon the branch of service, length of service time and the specific program applied for.
For example, there will be different qualifying requirements for active duty personnel, National Guard personnel and reservists. In addition, the dates of enlistment and discharge can possibly affect benefits in some cases. When planning to use any of these benefits, it is important to consult a representative of the intended school, a financial officer from the Department of Veteran Affairs or from another qualified agency.
The GI Education Bill is an excellent means for service men and women as well as veterans to advance their education. It can be a great help in covering assorted costs for tuition, fees, housing or other personal expenses. While it will probably not cover all the costs of specialized training, when used in combination with other financial programs, it can go a long way toward the cost of an advanced educational program.
